Tooth Extraction

patient needs tooth extractionDon’t Fear Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions don’t sound fun, but it’s important to know that it’s a routine, low-risk procedure that is relatively painless with minimal recovery.

In most cases, your dentist can handle a simple tooth extraction. However, sometimes a visit to an oral surgeon is needed for special cases.

Why Would I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom teeth removal is the most common tooth extraction procedure. When your wisdom teeth do not break through all the way, they can stop surrounding teeth from growing normally. This procedure is usually done by an oral surgeon.

Your dentist might also recommend tooth extraction to make room in your mouth for better alignment or to get rid of decayed and damaged teeth.

The Tooth Extraction Process

A tooth extraction is a pretty fast process and should only take a few minutes:

  1. After taking x-rays, the dentist or oral surgeon will review them with you and talk through the extraction steps.
  2. The dentist will use a local numbing agent for the tooth, gum, and bone.
  3. As the tooth is extracted you should only feel pressure, not pain.
  4. In most cases, the dentist can remove the tooth using applied pressure, rather than surgical intervention.

What Happens After a Tooth Extraction?

After the procedure, you’ll receive instructions on how to care for your mouth in the hours and days after. You might even get medication to relieve the pain.

As long as you follow the instructions, your gums should fully heal in a matter of weeks. Once that happens, you might be interested in getting an implant, bridge, or denture to replace the missing tooth.
